Boys Varsity Track Falls to Tecumseh and Pinckney

Bulldogs Lose: 0 - 0
Scores:  Tecumseh 69, Chelsea 68 and Pinckney 67, Chelsea 65 My comments: This was the tightest fought pair of contests in my coaching career.   Both meets came down to within 2 points.    Three of the five field events involved tiebreakers (all of which we lost), and a few other races had us on the short end of the stick by less than a second.     Many guys stepped up and had season-best performances to keep us in the hunt, but we simply cannot give away crucial close points if we want to win.    Another learning experience for these guys.     Anyhow, there were some highlights: - The distance crew once again carried the load, outscoring both teams by a combined score of 60-4. -  Hunter White had an outstanding day, placing well in all 3 sprint events, capped by a sub-52 second 400 race.   A great competitive effort. - Ronnie Buford won the shot put in his first ever track meet. - James Mida won the discus and continues to be a motivational leader. I hope that these guys remember and internalize the lessons on training, preparation, and execution that can be gleaned from an experience like this.  We will regroup and move forward towards post-season goals. We took a limited squad up to this big, long meet. Rather than running multiple events and trying to score across the board, we focused on running 1 or 2 events max per kid.    Still, we finished 4th out of 16 teams.      Highlights included: James Mida throwing a 10+ foot PR in the discus, and taking runner up honors with a heave of 147'4".   This places him 6th all time on Chelsea's list for that event. Jensen Holm winning the 3200 in a scorching 9:25 time.    He now ranks 4th all time Chelsea in that event, and is among the top few performers in the state right now. Tom Oates winning both the 1600 and the 800 in season best times, in spite of windy conditions. Big lifetime best performances, and regional qualifiers:  Connor Gilbreath and Will Scott in the mile, and Matt Rosolowski and Liam Hartsuff in the 3200. Hunter White with a PR in the 100, and a 4th place finish in the 400. We now turn our attention to our final home meet, this Tuesday.   We host both Pinckney and Tecumseh with the SEC lead on the line - both teams come in undefeated, but we hope to spoil the show.   I hope fans can come on down for a final chance to see spring's most exciting sport. First of all, THANKS to all volunteers, parents, fans, coaches, etc. who made this year a rousing success.   We put on an efficient, fun meet....and it did help that the weather was beautiful. We finished third as a team and had some very good performances.    Our placings were led by the distance squad, who finished 1st in all three of their relays.    The DMR and 4x800 teams each set meet records, and the 4x800 time is the fastest in Division 2 so far this year.     In the 4x3200 relay, we completed a "perfect" sweep of places, finishing 1-4 in the field of 32 men. The Kruse Relay guys earned runner-up medals, while several individuals had outstanding performances.    See attached for splits, individual results, etc. We head out tomorrow for a double -dual meet with Dexter and Lincoln.   There will be no easy dates this season, as the league has incredible parity.  We need to be at our best if we are to win ANY of the meets from here on in. It was a long meet against some pretty darn good competition.  We took home medals in roughly half of the events we competed in, and there were some very nice performances. The 4x1600 race was probably the highlight, as we took 4 of the top 6 places overall in a field of nearly 60 runners. Other lifetime bests included: -  James Mida with his 136 foot discus throw. -   Mike Tarasow clearing 12' 0' in the pole vault -  Carson Rabbitt and Hunter White with best ever 400 splits in the 1600 relay. Our 4x200 relay made a nice time drop, and generally, our sprint handoffs showed improvement from earlier in the week. We have a tough dual meet tomorrow at Adrian, who beat us last year, and then THIS FRIDAY we host the Chelsea Invitational. The weather is supposed to be nice, and I hope that fans can come on down and see a great meet. The time schedule includes:   - Field events beginning at 2:30 PM - Running Events beginning at 3:30 - The OPEN 3200 Run - for parents, siblings, and the general community.   The race is a beautiful loop around the Pierce Lake School property, finishing on the track in front of hundreds of screaming fans. The race is free, and we hope to get a large crowd for this fun family event. As we eventually move away from winter, I look forward to some nice running days and continued improvement

My Comments:    A fun way to start the season.  We managed to finish 5th out of 25 teams with a truncated squad.   The distance guys we brought showed that they have had a good winter of training.  The 4x800 won easily, the DMR was runner up, and Jensen and Carson had good races in the mile. Both sprint relays placed, an encouraging sign for this new group of guys.   Also, James Mida had a lifetime best in the Shot Put. This year will be exciting, as we try to find many pieces of the puzzle.    As we head into spring break, our success will be determined by how hard we want to work. A final note - runners were well rewarded by a bag of Spicy hot fries and some flavor blast Cheetos - which created a festive atmosphere on the ride home.
